Incapaz de manejar los problemas reales de Brasil, el gobierno de Jair Bolsonaro se entrometió en los asuntos internos de un país vecino, Venezuela, sometiéndose de forma humillante a la política exterior del presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump.

No compete a Brasil ni a otros países decidir quien debe o no debe gobernar a Venezuela, que tiene un presidente electo por la mayoría de la población. Al “reconocer” un gobierno autoproclamado, que no tiene origen en el voto, Jair Bolsonaro embarca a Brasil en una crisis que no es nuestra, al contrario de aportar para una solución política.

La intervención extranjera en Venezuela remite a América Latina de vuelta al siglo pasado; al tiempo de la Guerra Fría. ¿Cuántos golpes de Estado, cuántas dictaduras se establecieron en el continente bajo el pretexto de “defender la democracia”? Y siempre de acuerdo con los intereses de Estados Unidos.

Nuestros pueblos lucharon mucho para restablecer la democracia en la región. Construimos buenas relaciones, respetando el principio de la autodeterminación. Brasil desempeñó importante papel en este proceso, fortaleciendo Mercosur y aportando para la creación de la Unasur y de la Celac. Brasil pasó a ser respetado como mediador de conflictos en América Latina y en todo el mundo. Hoy, los nuevos organismos políticos regionales están siendo deliberadamente vaciados por gobiernos de derecha, entre los cuales se incluye el de Bolsonaro.

Tenemos con Venezuela desafíos comunes en nuestras fronteras, en el cuidado a nuestros pueblos, en la protección a Amazonia, en la producción de petróleo y un comercio intenso favorable a Brasil, que genera empleos y riqueza en nuestros países. A Brasil le interesa una Venezuela en paz , soberana y en desarrollo.

¿A quién interesa aislar al gobierno electo de Venezuela? ¿A quién interesa retomar el viejo orden en América Latina? ¿A quién interesa un conflicto en nuestra región, con grave riesgo de ser militarizado? ¿A quién interesa un nuevo Irak en nuestra vecindad? Al pueblo venezolano, brasileño y latinoamericano es que no.

Repudiamos la intervención en Venezuela y llamamos a las fuerzas democráticas de América Latina a retomar el diálogo político independiente que veníamos construyendo este Siglo XXI.

Who is interested in an intervention in Venezuela?

Incapable of tackling the real problems Brazil is facing, the government of Jair Bolsonaro has meddled in the domestic affairs of a neighboring country, Venezuela, in humiliating submission to the foreign policy of the president of the United States, Donald Trump.

It is not up to Brazil or to any other country to decide who should or not govern Venezuela, a country which has a president elected by the majority of its population. By “recognizing” a self-proclaimed government that has no votes to show, Jair Bolsonaro is pushing Brazil into a crisis that is not ours instead of contributing to a political solution.

The foreign intervention in Venezuela throws Latin America back in the last century; in the Cold War era. How many coups d’état, how many dictatorships were established in the continent under the pretext of “defending democracy”? And all of them always in the interest of the United States.

Our peoples have fought hard to reestablish democracy in the region. We have built good relations, while always respecting the principle of self-determination. Brazil played an important role in this process, strengthening the Mercosul and contributing to the creation of Unasul and Celac. Brazil came to be respected as a mediator of conflicts in Latin America and all around the world. Today, the new regional political bodies are being deliberately undermined by right-wing governments, among which is included that of Bolsonaro.

We share common challenges with Venezuela along our borders, in the care for our peoples, in protecting Amazonia, in oil production, plus a strong trade that is beneficial to Brazil, while generating jobs and wealth for our country. It is in Brazil’s interest that Venezuela be sovereign, in peace, and developing.

Who is interested in isolating the elected government of Venezuela? Who is interested in bringing back an old order to Latin America? Who is interested in a conflict in our region, one running the risk of being militarized? Who is interested in a new Iraq in our neighborhood? Most certainly not the people of Venezuela, Brazil, and Latin America.

We repudiate the intervention in Venezuela and call on the democratic forces of Latin America to resume the independent political dialogue we were building in this 21st century.
